18 risk managers receive first rimap examination certification

The Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) this evening presented the first qualifications by examination in its professional programme rimap® to 18 risk managers during a ceremony at the FERMA Seminar now taking place in Malta.rimap_H-logo-certified-RGB

A total of 22 risk managers sat the two-hour examination earlier in the day. They were the first risk managers to qualify by examination.

Michel Dennery, chairman of the rimap® programme, presented the awards and congratulated the successful candidates. He said: “Delivering a first rimap examination in 2016 has been a key objective for FERMA that is now achieved. The first certified risk managers will be seen in the future as the pioneers in the new standard for the risk manager’s profession.

Rimap provides independent confirmation of the professional competences, experience and standards of individual risk managers, and accreditation for the risk management programmes of educational bodies. Certification rests on four pillars: knowledge, experience, continuous professional development (CPD) and a code of ethics.

The examination consisted of 100 questions based on the rimap Body of Knowledge. To prepare themselves for the examination, candidates were recommended to read the eight risk management documents that inspired the rimap examination questions, which are available online.

The questions have been written by a team of 7 European risk managers from 5 FERMA member associations. It has been a challenge to find consensus sometimes but it is also what makes rimap different and quite unique. It is a risk management examination designed by risk managers for risk managers, and for their company who want to rely on an effective risk management!” said Julia Graham, member of the rimap® steering committee and Knowledge team.

Isabel Martinez

The examination is the latest of the milestones passed by rimap since it was launched in October 2015:

-Creation of the Body of Knowledge
-Accreditation of the first six education programmes
-Licensing of the first programmes for rimap CPD points

Isabel Martinez Torre-Enciso, vice-president of FERMA and member of the rimap® steering committee commented: “The next step is to refine the rimap examination on the basis of experience so that it reflects the complexity and diversity of the profession, and then to make the examination available for as many risk managers as possible”.

Note for journalists:  FERMA last year presented rimap certificates to 49 highly experienced risk managers who contributed to the creation of the rimap programme.

FERMA President Jo Willaert commented: “Education is one of the three priorities of my term as president. Having rimap® accredited education programmes is a building block in our long term initiative to place risk management firmly among the professions. Others will follow.”

The Chairman of the rimap® steering committee, FERMA board member Michel Dennery, added: “We believe we are at the beginning of a European network in risk management education. A prime opportunity to enhance professional skills

Dirk Wegener

FERMA’s 2016 Risk Management Seminar will take place from 3 to 4 October in St Julian’s, Malta. The Seminar is a more intimate occasion than the Forum which takes places in alternate years. It aims at providing knowledge and understanding so risk managers can deepen their skills, discuss the latest trends and share experiences. According to FERMA board member Dirk Wegener, who is heading the Seminar committee: “Development of our professional skill sets is the focus of the Seminar programme.”

He explains, “Besides providing respected speakers, the Seminar will be an excellent opportunity to talk and to listen to the thoughts and ideas of your European peers. We plan to have risk managers only round table sessions to strengthen the communication on very specific topics among this group of professionals in an almost private setting. FERMA considers education to be key for the future of risk managers, and therefore the Seminar will also be linked to our rimap© certification initiative.”

The Seminar website is expected to launch in February (*) with registration beginning end of March. FERMA is currently asking its members for subjects for discussion at the Seminar, and three specific sessions have been set aside for topics proposed by the national associations. Individual risk managers should make their suggestions to their national association as soon as possible.

The Malta Risk and Insurance Management Association (MARM) is the host for the event and its President Ian-Edward Stafrace said: “Malta is a known EU insurance domicile, specialising in captives and protected cells, with all leading insurance management companies licensed and operating from the island. Many captives licensed in Malta are, in fact, planning their board meetings around the Seminar. Malta is also known for its funds sector, with many members from our association being risk specialists in market and credit risk. We are also leaders in e-gaming with risk management in areas such as fraud and cyber risk. MARM will also use the seminar to spread awareness and knowledge of risk management to the Maltese business community.”
