FERMA European Risk Management Certification goes live online

The Federation of European Risk Management Associations announced that its European Certification programme is now live online. The first online examinations will start in September.

Says FERMA President Jo Willaert, “This is a major step forward in giving access to FERMA Certification to risk professionals throughout Europe. Application, registration, all educational materials and examinations are now open to any qualified risk professional through the internet.

FERMA Certification is the only European professional designation for risk managers. Developed by FERMA and its 22 national associations, it provides independent confirmation of the professional competences, experience and standards of individual risk managers. Certification rests on four pillars: knowledge, experience, continuous professional development (CPD) and a code of ethics. These four pillars ensure that knowledge is joined to experience and professional ethics.

FERMA will remain responsible for the content and approval of the candidates. FERMA’s partner, an established supplier of online insurance and risk management education ANZIIF, is providing the platform and will schedule examinations online every month from September.

Says Jo, “We are very excited about this step for Certification and its value in the continuing development of the risk management profession in Europe. The process is easy and candidates have direct access to the materials to prepare for the exam. Some of our members’ countries will also organise a physical training programme for candidates.

Well underway

Eighteen risk managers from across Europe are already rimap® certified following the first examination and presentation of certificates at the FERMA Seminar in Malta in October. Ian Stafrace, President of the Seminar host association MARM, commented afterwards: “Already the publicity about rimap is helping to raise awareness of the risk manager. As the pool of rimap certified risk professionals grows, employers will be able to add a rimap certificate to job specifications, so that they know the person is both skilled at his or her profession and has a European perspective.”

More than 60 participants in total have already followed the five modules of the training course organised by the Italian association ANRA, the ANRA learning path (ALP), one of the first programmes to receive rimap accreditation. The training sessions started in June and are continuing throughout the rest of the year.

“We had a good representation of both risk and insurance managers and other professionals from the insurance and consulting worlds. They discussed more than 50 topics: nearly a third of these subjects were introduced for the first time in an ANRA’s training course, demonstrating the strong orientation ALP shows toward innovation,” said Maurizio Castelli, former President of FERMA and Scientific Advisor to ANRA who has been in charge of the project since its inception.

The next steps on the rimap route for FERMA will involve working with member associations to achieve full implementation, including the system of credit for continuous professional development.

rimap® developments: bridging the gap between education and the profession in Europe

FERMA’s professional certification programme rimap® took an important step forward on 23 June, as FERMA disclosed the names of the first six education programmes in risk management to receive rimap accreditation.

Accreditation is one of the three building blocks of rimap, along with certification and CPD (continuous professional development). It is designed to acknowledge that an education provider’s programme meets the risk management education requirements set by FERMA based on the rimap ‘Body of Knowledge’.

rimap-without-background

Rimap accreditation confirms that the education body is willing to deliver a risk management education programme that is in line with the first European criteria agreed by FERMA associations.

“It is important for the students to know they are following an education programme that is in line with what the profession is expecting. This is best achieved by the professional associations in each country that represent the risk practitioners in Europe,” says Isabel Martinez Torre-Enciso, FERMA Vice President and the person responsible for the accreditation process within the rimap steering committee.

Bridge between academia and profession

Accreditation is also a bridge between the world of risk management education and the professional associations. In 2016, the choice was made to work with a closed list of education bodies that volunteered their interest in the process to FERMA and which were supported by their national risk management associations. For an academic’s view of this process, see the expert view by Marcus Feldt of the Stockholm School of Economics Executive Education here.

“We are pleased to see that the accredited education bodies reflect the diversity of FERMA membership with universities, business schools and professional institutes operated by national associations themselves. The geographical spread also shows that risk management education is developing across Europe, from Finland to Malta.” adds Isabel.

The criteria for accreditation are based on a certain number of hours of teaching, and an 80% match between the rimap Body of Knowledge and the programme. These elements, including the list of teachers and a description of the selection process, were documented by an online submission process through the rimap website.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Finally, we are building the CPD element. We have received a number of requests for licensing for events, and we have so far confirmed to Lloyd’s a CPD license for the FERMA/Lloyd’s Professional Development Programme.

The CPD process is also about to be tested full scale at the FERMA Seminar in Malta on 3-4 October. The details are still to be confirmed, but various Seminar activities should entitle all participants to at least 25 CPD points. These points will be stored electronically on individual rimap accounts for further use when Seminar participants register for the rimap examination: http://rimap-certified.org/

FERMA announces first accreditations for its certification programme, rimap®

The Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) has announced the first six education bodies to receive accreditation for its professional certification rimap®. FERMA President Jo Willaert commented: “Education is one of the three priorities of my term as president. Having rimap® accredited education programmes is a building block in our long term initiative to place risk management firmly among the professions. I am delighted with the support we have received from the member associations who have worked closely with FERMA and the education bodies to achieve this first set of accreditations. Others will follow.”

The Chairman of the rimap® steering committee, FERMA board member Michel Dennery, added: “We believe we are at the beginning of a European network in risk management education. Beyond the need for increasing the skills and competences of risk managers, the FERMA rimap® initiative is now supported by the world of education.”

Certification launch with rimap

FERMA launches first professional Certification for European risk managers with award ceremony

Today (5 October) the Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) formally launched its programme of European Certification for professional risk managers.  It is the first such designation and is designed to reinforce the standing of the profession in Europe.

FERMA’s Certification, called rimap®, will provide independent confirmation of the professional competences, experience and standards of individual risk managers, and accreditation for the risk management programmes of educational bodies. rimap® rests on four pillars: knowledge, experience, continuous professional development (CPD) and a code of ethics.

FERMA has marked the occasion at the opening of its 2015 Risk Management Forum in Venice today with the award of Founder Certification to individuals in the risk management community who have been responsible for the creation, development and initial testing of the essential elements of Certification. They will be ambassadors for rimap®. FERMA intends to open applications for Certification in early 2016, with the first awards expected in the spring.

At the launch, FERMA board member Michel Dennery, Chair of the FERMA Certification Steering Committee, said: “Today, there is a strong expectation from stakeholders about risk management; that is why we have created the first high level pan-European recognition of the profession of risk management that will respond to these expectations.”

Prof. Karel Van Hulle, Chairman of the Insurance and Reinsurance Stakeholder Group of EIOPA, welcomed the launch of rimap®. He said: “The financial crisis showed clearly the need for good risk management. It is in the interest of all stakeholders that firms attach great importance to the timely identification, evaluation and management of their risks and to the mitigation of those risks. Risk management should have a higher status in our educational institutions. I welcome the fact that FERMA has taken up this challenge and I hope that the initiative will be successful.”

FERMA also unveiled the Certification programme brand and logos.
